Team Meeting #1 Notes

Hello all you running enthusiasts! Here are the minutes from our first 2011 team meeting.

HOW ARE WE DEVELOPING OUR TEAM?
As it has been done in years past, legacy runners from the 2010 team will have first option of running. From that point, it will be the first who pay their entry fee. There will be 20 runners and four alternates. The first 20 people who pay their fee will be runners, the next four will be alternates. The four alternates will be asked to hold onto their checks as alternates are not being required to pay the fee. Please keep in mind if you are named an alternate, when someone cancels, we will draw first from the alternate list. We will need to take 20 runners and four alternates with us to the event as per race rules. (We actually had to use an alternate last year - good thing we had back-up!)

WHAT IS THE ENTRY FEE?
Every runner will be responsible to pay a $50 entrance fee. This fee will not be reimbursable, however, it will be transferable in the case of needing to cancel. If a runner does need to cancel, the team captains will find a replacement runner. That replacement runner will then be responsible to pay the $50 to the person s/he is replacing; the cancelling runner is also responsible to get the $50 from her/his replacement. We will be accepting payment beginning 01 November through 15 November. Please make checks paid to USCGAUX Flotilla 55, memo should read 2011 B2V Entry Fee. You can mail them to PA1 Allyson Conroy, PADET San Diego, 2701 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, 92101. (These checks will be deposited into our Team 1790 account.)

WHAT DOES THE ENTRY FEE GO TOWARD?
The team entry fee is $1,900. This will be paid to the team organizers NLT 15 December. If we do not pay this entry fee by this date, there will be no Team 1790 in the 2011 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. On top of the entry fee, the team has to pay for the command center where we have all of our meetings and where our communications are based out of. We also need to make sure there is water in the follow vehicle for the runners. On the conservative spectrum we need to raise $5,000 to make this team work.

HOW ARE WE RAISING MONEY?
We currently have t-shirts that we are asking for a donation of $15 and hats for an $18 donation to help us out. Twenty-five percent of every donation will be donated to the Coast Guard Foundation Family Disaster Fund, which at the moment is benefiting the families of 6017. The rest of the money will go toward the cost of the merchandise and Team 1790. To break even and attain our goal, each runner should be responsible for 30 t-shirts. T-shirts can be picked up in the PADET San Diego office on Sector San Diego, 2nd Deck of Hangar 2, or ordered online at www.allteamsportsinc.com.

INDIVIDUAL MWR HELP
The Coast Guard has a CG Sports Participation Grant Program. Each runner is highly encouraged to submit for this race to help with expenses (you can also tack on any other races you are interested in - marathons, half marathons, triathlons, ultramarathons). You need to have your package in NLT 03 January 2011. The message that came out is ALCGPSC 090/10.

WHERE TO STAY IN VEGAS?
The event is centered at the LV Hilton. It is a nice hotel - not too shabby, pretty close to the strip. If you are able to stay here, please book your hotel reservations through www.bakervegas.com. On the left hand side there is a link for "host hotels." The event gets credit for everyone who makes their reservations through the B2V website - what this means is more support from the hotel for this wonderful event. You should book a room for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

COMMAND SUPPORT
We have spoken with the commands of Sector San Diego as well as Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach and both are very supportive. For those participating in the race permissive orders will be drawn up for them. GVs will be used to caravan to Vegas from SLA and SSD (more info on this to follow closer to the race).

First Team Meeting for B2V 2011

Hello Team 1790! Tomorrow, 14 Oct, is our first 2011 team meeting. The meeting will be in the Sector San Diego's training room at 0900. We will talk about how we are going to choose our team, runners' entry fee, and what you can expect as a team member for 2011. If you are interested in running and cannot make the meeting, be sure to get in touch with one of your team captains, Lt. j.g Bill Burwell, PA1 Allyson Conroy, or BM3 Mike Lesley, so we can ensure you receive the meeting minutes. Attention all B2V 2011 fans!

Good Afternoon All interested Baker to Vegas runners and volunteers,
We wanted to touch base with all of you and let you know what has been going on planning B2V 2011.

First of all, we are already doing some fundraising to help pay for the entry fee, the command center suit and other incidentals the race requires. There are t-shirts you can purchase that help the team, while at the same time making a donation to the Coast Guard Foundation's Family Disaster Relief Fund that is directly supporting the families of the 6017 crash at this point in time. If you are interested in purchasing one (or more!) of these shirts, please see/ask one of the team captains (if you are local in SD) or go to www.allteamsportsinc.com and click on our logo. These shirts will be on sale until December. So hurry and get them while they last!

Second, all three of us will be heading to the Baker to Vegas Team Captain's meeting in Los Angeles 13 October to really get this season started off on the correct running shoe. We are planning on holding a team meeting 14 Oct. It will be in San Diego aboard Sector. If you are not in the area or can't make it, I will send out meeting minutes to keep you up to speed.

Third, we have received a lot of interest for runners - THANK YOU! We will discuss at the meeting how we will determine our team.

Baker to Vegas 2011: Are you game?

Hello All!
A little more than two months ago nearly 80 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, auxiliary members, family and friends participated in one way or another in the 26th Annual Baker to Vegas Relay Challenge Cup. This is a 120 mile relay race challenge through the desert among more than 200 law enforcement teams. It challenges strength, agility, endurance, and teamwork, while at the same time promoting camaraderie.

The time to plan for next year's race is upon us and we are asking for runners and volunteers. Do you think you have what it takes to run in the desert at midday? Or through the mountains at more than 3,500 feet, or get up in the middle of the night to run your leg, stand your watch or drive your shuttle? Of course you do!! This will be the fourth year in a row the Coast Guard has been able to put together a team, and you don't want to miss it. If you don't feel as if you are a strong enough runner to run, we need volunteers. This is a major commitment for an event you will be proud to be a part of on race day, April 16-17, 2011. Check out the team website, http://www.bakervegas.com/index.php. There are less than 300 days until we meet in Vegas to show the rest of the Law Enforcement community what we are made of.

This year's team welcomes two new team captains: Lt.j.g Bill Burwell and PA1 Allyson Conroy. BM3 Mike Lesley has been involved with the race for a number of years and with the Coast Guard team since its inception in 2008.

If you are interested in participating, let one of us know. We will be having a meeting aboard Sector San Diego in the near future for those who are seriously interested. (If you can't make it to San Diego, don't worry we will fill you in on all of the news.) We look forward to hearing from our legacy runners as well as meeting some fresh faces. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask any of the team captains.

362 Days and counting...

After much anticipation and the results being debated litterally to the last second, Team Coast Guard finished 5th out of 7 with a time of 18:56.00. We didn't mug this year, but came so close. We are already planning next year, so keep running and we'll post more information soon. Thank you so much to all of the runners, especially you last minute runners, thank you to all of the volunteers. What a great year! (more photos to follow)

The final runner, Lt. j.g. Stephani Young, has crossed the finish line. Great job to all of the runners, the command center/all communications personnel, shuttle drivers, follow vehicle drivers, and all of those who came out to support the team. Another successful year in the history books.

Without our logistical team, the runners would have to find their own way to and from their starting points - not to mention helping the environment by carpooling into the desert and back to Vegas. Auxiliary member Anthony Turner received an e-mail from Capt. Paul Wiedenhoeft, one of our dearly missed runners who ran the first two years. He’d like to tell Team Coast Guard that he’s ringing a cowbell for everyone. Capt. W’s message:

 p.s. I injured my back throwing bags onto the army plane that took me out of Haiti. It took 3 weeks to heal but I'm okay now.

Race Day - Stage Six, Seven, Eight

Chief Lesley Hearn ran 6.1 miles in 105-degree heat and handed the baton off to Lt. Theresa Brooks at 4:03 p.m., who ran 6.2 miles for leg six. Seaman Justin Olson accepted the baton from Brooks at 5:14 p.m., for leg seven. OS1 Eddie Foster received the baton 6.7 miles later at 6:05 to begin leg eight. By that time the temperature had dropped 27 degrees to 78 degrees as the sun began to slip behind the mountains of the desert. Foster will run 7.4 miles and bring the team into Nevada!! You all are doing a beautiful job!

Race Day - Stage Two

0530: PA1 Conroy and BM3 Lesley depart to Baker School for presentation with Student Runner.

0700: Follow Vehicle driven by AUX Blanchette and AUX Laborde departs Command Room enroute to follow vehicle check-in at 1000.

0740: Shuttle Van #1 Team meets in Command Room. Team #1 consists of ENS Ekmark (2) and LT Bruns (3), OSC Mendez (Alt. #1) runners with team catchers and other support staff.

0800: Shuttle Van #1 departs Hilton enroute to starting line.

1015: LT Fenstemacher checks in at starting line (stage 1)

1040: Shuttle Van #2 Team meets in Command Room. Team #2 consists of LTJG Kim (4), OSC Hearn (5) and LT Brooks (6) with team catchers and other support staff, as well as MST3 Scates (Alt. #2).

1100: Shuttle Van #2 departs Hilton enroute to Stage 4.

1240: Shuttle Van #3 Team meets in Command Room. Team #3 consists of SN Olson (7), and OS1 Foster (8), with team catchers and other support staff along with the 2nd F/V Shift driven by AUX Muller and AUX Uy.

1300: Shuttle Van #3 departs Hilton enroute to Stage 7.

~0500: Coast Guard Baker to Vegas Team crosses finish line for the third time inside the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. All hands keep communications open with command center to be there when the team crosses the line.

And the team has arrived safe and sound in Sunny Las Vegas! the sun is out and warming the desert to a balmy 80 degrees.

First order of business is the team meeting in room 341 at 2000. For all of those enjoying the pool, it is on the same floor. See there soon!

Let's get this party started!

We begin our third year as a United States Coast Guard team participating in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.

The race, originally started as a competition between the Los Angeles Police
Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, has grown into an international running event with more than 260 agencies participating. The race begins on the outskirts of Baker, Calif,. and finishes inside the LasVegas Hilton Casino and Convention Center in Las Vegas. Although the race has grown since its original conception, the fundamental ideals of the race continue: teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness and competition.

The Coast Guard team includes more than 75 Active Duty, Reserve and Auxiliary Coast Guard members. The race is incredibly dynamic as it takes place in the flat Mojave Desert, high altitude mountains and the urban environment of Las Vegas. Additionally, the race is run through the night, so temperatures range from in the 90s at the start of the race down to the 30s at night. Because of this dynamic and complex 120-mile race, the support personnel for the race are imperative. They fulfill roles such as command center watchstanding, communications support, vehicle support,
catchers for the runner, public affairs and many more.

In addition to the run, our team is also sponsoring a 10th grader from Baker
High School. Our adopted runner will be wearing our team t-shirt and will be involved in a relay of 20 other student runners from Baker High School to the starting line of the Challenge Cup Relay.

This year our team is especially honored to be running in memory of the crew of CG-1705. We have a tribute to them on our team t-shirts as well as the CG-1705 crew being listed on the official race baton. This race baton is used by all of the teams through the duration of the race, and includes in-the-line-of-duty deaths from all of the agencies involved. Lastly, the crew will be featured in the closing ceremonies program in a video tribute with other fallen officers from federal, state and local agencies participating in the race. As fallen Guardians, the crew of CG-1705 will truly be our motivation, and will be with us there in spirit.

5 days and a wake up!

We are less than a week away now and I know everyone is getting excited. On our FaceBook page photos seem to be developing out of the woodwork from our previous years.

A little something different this year is the 1790 team sponsoring a high school athlete from Baker High School. Sophomore Francisco plays football and baseball and from our understanding, he needs to borrow all of his equipment for practice and games. I remember all of the sports I played in high school and the only thing we had to purchase were swimsuits for water polo and the swim team, a mitt for softball (though there were plenty to borrow if need be) and uniforms for cheerleading. Everything else was provided – bats, bases, helmets, etc. Oh yeah, and we didn’t have to fork out hundreds of dollars in sport fees either. But then again, this was almost 20 years ago and times have changed! We are all so very excited to be able to help a fellow athlete achieve his goals and reach his dreams.

So far close to $200 has been raised for Francisco. I plan on heading to Sports Authority Monday morning to purchase the equipment his coach has passed along to us. Thank you to everyone who has donated! I know this will help him out.

So what is the school doing? Is this a charity case? Well, these are athletes, and they have put together their own relay of sorts from Baker High School to the B2V start line – approximately 20 miles. Francisco will don a CG team shirt and run his leg of the relay Saturday morning before we set off on our relay later that day. Should be a great time for all!
