Lack of Race Posts

We are 51 days out from our fourth year participating in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. For those of you who don't have the dates, the race takes place 16-17 April. We recommend you plan on being in Vegas Friday, Saturday, Sunday and returning on Monday. The awards ceremony traditionally is held Sunday evening about 1800.

Please visit www.bakervegas.com for more information. You will need to make hotel reservations. There is a button on the website called "host hotels" and they will help you register at the Riviera or the Hilton. We highly recommend you stay at one of these hotels since it is very close to where the command center (LV Hilton) will be set up. The Command Center is the brains of the operation. It is where we will have our Friday night team meeting, where you will meet your shuttle to get to your leg, where we will meet Sunday evening to discuss the outcome of the race. However, if you decide to stay elsewhere, you need to make sure you can get to the Command Center to meet your shuttle on time otherwise you will miss your leg and possibly others will miss their legs as well.

Also, please read the rule book. There is a lot of valuable information in there. We do not want any violations! Each violation has a penalty that results in minutes added to the overall time, which as we found out last year can be make or break for taking home a mug! http://bakervegas.com/rulebook.php

You will be responsible for your food in Vegas and any souvenirs you purchase. As we have done in the past, we will be using GVs and caravan to Vegas Friday. If you would like to ride in the caravan, please make sure you let PO Mike Lesley know so he can work the logistics.

As we have done in the past, we will be ordering Team t-shirts. This year there will be a few options: a running shirt for the runners on the course (a light color like white or gray), a team t-shirt for our Logistics staff, a polo shirt we will wear for the Sunday ceremony and a Team hoodie sweatshirt. PO Lesley is working with our vendor on the team gear and we will pass ordering info in the next couple of weeks. Also as we have done in the past, we will schedule a team get together the weekend prior to the race to distribute team gear and pass any last minute information. This will probably be somewhere in the middle of San Diego and L.A. - possibly Oceanside or Dana Point.

Team Meeting #1 Notes

Hello all you running enthusiasts! Here are the minutes from our first 2011 team meeting.

HOW ARE WE DEVELOPING OUR TEAM?
As it has been done in years past, legacy runners from the 2010 team will have first option of running. From that point, it will be the first who pay their entry fee. There will be 20 runners and four alternates. The first 20 people who pay their fee will be runners, the next four will be alternates. The four alternates will be asked to hold onto their checks as alternates are not being required to pay the fee. Please keep in mind if you are named an alternate, when someone cancels, we will draw first from the alternate list. We will need to take 20 runners and four alternates with us to the event as per race rules. (We actually had to use an alternate last year - good thing we had back-up!)

WHAT IS THE ENTRY FEE?
Every runner will be responsible to pay a $50 entrance fee. This fee will not be reimbursable, however, it will be transferable in the case of needing to cancel. If a runner does need to cancel, the team captains will find a replacement runner. That replacement runner will then be responsible to pay the $50 to the person s/he is replacing; the cancelling runner is also responsible to get the $50 from her/his replacement. We will be accepting payment beginning 01 November through 15 November. Please make checks paid to USCGAUX Flotilla 55, memo should read 2011 B2V Entry Fee. You can mail them to PA1 Allyson Conroy, PADET San Diego, 2701 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, 92101. (These checks will be deposited into our Team 1790 account.)

WHAT DOES THE ENTRY FEE GO TOWARD?
The team entry fee is $1,900. This will be paid to the team organizers NLT 15 December. If we do not pay this entry fee by this date, there will be no Team 1790 in the 2011 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. On top of the entry fee, the team has to pay for the command center where we have all of our meetings and where our communications are based out of. We also need to make sure there is water in the follow vehicle for the runners. On the conservative spectrum we need to raise $5,000 to make this team work.

HOW ARE WE RAISING MONEY?
We currently have t-shirts that we are asking for a donation of $15 and hats for an $18 donation to help us out. Twenty-five percent of every donation will be donated to the Coast Guard Foundation Family Disaster Fund, which at the moment is benefiting the families of 6017. The rest of the money will go toward the cost of the merchandise and Team 1790. To break even and attain our goal, each runner should be responsible for 30 t-shirts. T-shirts can be picked up in the PADET San Diego office on Sector San Diego, 2nd Deck of Hangar 2, or ordered online at www.allteamsportsinc.com.

INDIVIDUAL MWR HELP
The Coast Guard has a CG Sports Participation Grant Program. Each runner is highly encouraged to submit for this race to help with expenses (you can also tack on any other races you are interested in - marathons, half marathons, triathlons, ultramarathons). You need to have your package in NLT 03 January 2011. The message that came out is ALCGPSC 090/10.

WHERE TO STAY IN VEGAS?
The event is centered at the LV Hilton. It is a nice hotel - not too shabby, pretty close to the strip. If you are able to stay here, please book your hotel reservations through www.bakervegas.com. On the left hand side there is a link for "host hotels." The event gets credit for everyone who makes their reservations through the B2V website - what this means is more support from the hotel for this wonderful event. You should book a room for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

COMMAND SUPPORT
We have spoken with the commands of Sector San Diego as well as Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach and both are very supportive. For those participating in the race permissive orders will be drawn up for them. GVs will be used to caravan to Vegas from SLA and SSD (more info on this to follow closer to the race).

We will talk about how we are going to choose our team, runners' entry fee, and what you can expect as a team member for 2011. Good Afternoon All interested Baker to Vegas runners and volunteers,
We wanted to touch base with all of you and let you know what has been going on planning B2V 2011.

First of all, we are already doing some fundraising to help pay for the entry fee, the command center suit and other incidentals the race requires. There are t-shirts you can purchase that help the team, while at the same time making a donation to the Coast Guard Foundation's Family Disaster Relief Fund that is directly supporting the families of the 6017 crash at this point in time. If you are interested in purchasing one (or more!) of these shirts, please see/ask one of the team captains (if you are local in SD) or go to www.allteamsportsinc.com and click on our logo. These shirts will be on sale until December. So hurry and get them while they last!

Second, all three of us will be heading to the Baker to Vegas Team Captain's meeting in Los Angeles 13 October to really get this season started off on the correct running shoe. We are planning on holding a team meeting 14 Oct. It will be in San Diego aboard Sector. If you are not in the area or can't make it, I will send out meeting minutes to keep you up to speed.

Third, we have received a lot of interest for runners - THANK YOU! We will discuss at the meeting how we will determine our team.

Baker to Vegas 2011: Are you game?

Hello All!
A little more than two months ago nearly 80 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, auxiliary members, family and friends participated in one way or another in the 26th Annual Baker to Vegas Relay Challenge Cup. This is a 120 mile relay race challenge through the desert among more than 200 law enforcement teams. It challenges strength, agility, endurance, and teamwork, while at the same time promoting camaraderie.

The time to plan for next year's race is upon us and we are asking for runners and volunteers. Do you think you have what it takes to run in the desert at midday? Or through the mountains at more than 3,500 feet, or get up in the middle of the night to run your leg, stand your watch or drive your shuttle? Of course you do!! This will be the fourth year in a row the Coast Guard has been able to put together a team, and you don't want to miss it. If you don't feel as if you are a strong enough runner to run, we need volunteers. This is a major commitment for an event you will be proud to be a part of on race day, April 16-17, 2011. Check out the team website, http://www.bakervegas.com/index.php. There are less than 300 days until we meet in Vegas to show the rest of the Law Enforcement community what we are made of.

This year's team welcomes two new team captains: Lt.j.g Bill Burwell and PA1 Allyson Conroy. BM3 Mike Lesley has been involved with the race for a number of years and with the Coast Guard team since its inception in 2008.

If you are interested in participating, let one of us know. We will be having a meeting aboard Sector San Diego in the near future for those who are seriously interested. (If you can't make it to San Diego, don't worry we will fill you in on all of the news.) We look forward to hearing from our legacy runners as well as meeting some fresh faces. After much anticipation and the results being debated litterally to the last second, Team Coast Guard finished 5th out of 7 with a time of 18:56.00. We didn't mug this year, but came so close. We are already planning next year, so keep running and we'll post more information soon. Auxiliary member Anthony Turner received an e-mail from Capt. Paul Wiedenhoeft, one of our dearly missed runners who ran the first two years. He’d like to tell Team Coast Guard that he’s ringing a cowbell for everyone. Capt. W’s message:

COW BELL! Go Team 1790! MUG!   Anthony,  Truly special memories of all aspects of the B2V experience. Preparing, running, riding along with you cheering, ringing a little cow bell, helping at transition areas, even partying with a great collection of team coast guard.  I am glad to see some new faces and a good representation of "3-peaters" on the team.  Looking forward to tracking progress on line as you continue to press the technology envelopes of public affairs in the desert.  CAPT W  p.s. I injured my back throwing bags onto the army plane that took me out of Haiti. It took 3 weeks to heal but I'm okay now.

Race Day - Stage Six, Seven, Eight

Chief Lesley Hearn ran 6.1 miles in 105-degree heat and handed the baton off to Lt. Theresa Brooks at 4:03 p.m., who ran 6.2 miles for leg six. Seaman Justin Olson accepted the baton from Brooks at 5:14 p.m., for leg seven. OS1 Eddie Foster received the baton 6.7 miles later at 6:05 to begin leg eight. By that time the temperature had dropped 27 degrees to 78 degrees as the sun began to slip behind the mountains of the desert. Foster will run 7.4 miles and bring the team into Nevada!! You all are doing a beautiful job!

We begin our third year as a United States Coast Guard team participating in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.

The race, originally started as a competition between the Los Angeles Police
Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, has grown into an international running event with more than 260 agencies participating. The race begins on the outskirts of Baker, Calif,. and finishes inside the LasVegas Hilton Casino and Convention Center in Las Vegas. Although the race has grown since its original conception, the fundamental ideals of the race continue: teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness and competition.

The Coast Guard team includes more than 75 Active Duty, Reserve and Auxiliary Coast Guard members. The race is incredibly dynamic as it takes place in the flat Mojave Desert, high altitude mountains and the urban environment of Las Vegas. Additionally, the race is run through the night, so temperatures range from in the 90s at the start of the race down to the 30s at night. Because of this dynamic and complex 120-mile race, the support personnel for the race are imperative. They fulfill roles such as command center watchstanding, communications support, vehicle support,
catchers for the runner, public affairs and many more.

In addition to the run, our team is also sponsoring a 10th grader from Baker
High School. Our adopted runner will be wearing our team t-shirt and will be involved in a relay of 20 other student runners from Baker High School to the starting line of the Challenge Cup Relay.

This year our team is especially honored to be running in memory of the crew of CG-1705. We have a tribute to them on our team t-shirts as well as the CG-1705 crew being listed on the official race baton. This race baton is used by all of the teams through the duration of the race, and includes in-the-line-of-duty deaths from all of the agencies involved. Lastly, the crew will be featured in the closing ceremonies program in a video tribute with other fallen officers from federal, state and local agencies participating in the race. As fallen Guardians, the crew of CG-1705 will truly be our motivation, and will be with us there in spirit.

5 days and a wake up!

We are less than a week away now and I know everyone is getting excited. On our FaceBook page photos seem to be developing out of the woodwork from our previous years.

A little something different this year is the 1790 team sponsoring a high school athlete from Baker High School. Sophomore Francisco plays football and baseball and from our understanding, he needs to borrow all of his equipment for practice and games. I remember all of the sports I played in high school and the only thing we had to purchase were swimsuits for water polo and the swim team, a mitt for softball (though there were plenty to borrow if need be) and uniforms for cheerleading. Everything else was provided – bats, bases, helmets, etc. Oh yeah, and we didn’t have to fork out hundreds of dollars in sport fees either. But then again, this was almost 20 years ago and times have changed! We are all so very excited to be able to help a fellow athlete achieve his goals and reach his dreams.

So far close to $200 has been raised for Francisco. I plan on heading to Sports Authority Monday morning to purchase the equipment his coach has passed along to us. Thank you to everyone who has donated! I know this will help him out.

So what is the school doing? Is this a charity case? Well, these are athletes, and they have put together their own relay of sorts from Baker High School to the B2V start line – approximately 20 miles. Francisco will don a CG team shirt and run his leg of the relay Saturday morning before we set off on our relay later that day. Should be a great time for all!

For all those who did not make the run on Saturday, you missed out. It was a great day to run the strand and we even had a flyover by AIRSTA on my last mile! Too bad I got my but kicked by Joe Rudolph and John Dirschel (Leslie Hearn and I held our ground though!). Also of note was Greg Duncan running further than everyone and thus disappearing at the end.

Thanks to all those who could make it! We are planning an after work run on the stairs (pending rain!) sometime later this week.

Also, we are having our BBQ this Sunday starting at 1100. It would be great if we can get as big a turnout as possible. The event will include volunteers, runners and family and promises to be fun and informative for first (and second) time participants. We are handing out the team t-shirts, so please bring cash/checks so you can take yours home. We will be delegating out certain foods by Wednesday, so if you plan on bringing something specific please let me know before then.

Notes from this Past Weekend

This past Saturday I met with the volunteers for the race and they are just as excited as all of us to participate. We have a really great mix of active duty, civilian, auxiliary and reserves all helping so I cannot be more thrilled about our team volunteers. Also two more official forms were submitted today, getting more final paperwork out of the way!

I was out at Huntington Beach this weekend and did not see anyone so did a run by myself. I actually like running near the pier in the AM...lots of fun people and surroundings too look at and relatively flat!

If anyone is interested in setting up a run this week please let me know. Otherwise, look for a run this upcoming weekend! Keep running and FYI...the run is only 24 days away! Let us know if you have any questions/concerns.

There will be a team run this Sunday at the Huntington Beach dog beach. The run will start at 0800. We will meet in the parking lot around 0750 and stretch out to start the run. Runner's Roster Due Tomorrow!

So now that I am back in town, DC1 is out of here to recuperate from surgery! It has been a whirlwind of a month, so onward to February.

We have a lot to get done in the upcoming weeks but first up is the roster. An official Team Roster of up to 45 potential runners to select from is due to race officials tomorrow. I am sending the form 30JAN09 COB (pending CO's approval).

Right now we have 6 free runner spots and 4 alternate runner spots. New rules from the race committee state that because we will be running as a federal team, we can have anyone that was stationed at Sector Los Angeles- Long Beach last year as a runner candidate to pull from.

Good Morning from the East Coast!

I am currently TDY in D.C. working with the Armed Forces Inaugural
Committee; besides the incredibly rewarding experience it has been a
lot of fun to try out new places to run (have to stay in shape for
race day!). One of the best parts of running around D.C. is you never
know who you will run into...When I was running in the mall area I
ended up running side by side with a Two Star General on his lunch
break. He thought he was the only crazy one running in the cold, and
asked why I was braving the cold weather as well. I told him about B2V
and he thought it sounded like an amazing event and he wished Team
Coast Guard good luck.

I hope you are all getting your workouts in...and I look forward to
getting back to LA-LB and the warm weather!

Let's start off the New Year with a nice 6 mile run. I would like to
meet at the waterfront just outside of the Catalina Ferry Terminal
(The Down Town Landing) at 0800.

The plan is to park our vehicles at the terminal parking garage and
meet just west of the passenger loading area.
I will have a van available to take all runners up to the Del Amo exit
just North of I-405. We will drive up and run back to our vehicles.
The run will start at approximately 0830 and go until about 0930 or
1000 hopefully.

Due to an injury to my right foot I will be in the vehicle the entire
time but will be available for refreshments and first aid at the 3
mile mark and the finish line.

The course is marked at 1/4 mile intervals the entire way so it
shouldn't be difficult to track your pace.

Team 1790,

Our official site is now up and running! This will be a great place to check up on Team Coast Guard as we prepare for the race and the events leading up to it. So please share the link with family and friends.

Yesterday, DC1 Wissmann submitted our official check to the race directors, so we are officially in! Unfortunately, we have been slacking on the team runs-so I hope you have been running on your own! Luckily, with the New Year coming, we are ushering in a great plan that we hope our team can stick to-check out the calendar section. Our first Team run will be on 03JAN09 with a follow up meeting on 05JAN09. Look on the website or in your inboxes for more details to come.

Baker to Vegas enthusiasts,

Below are the minutes from our last meeting. Apologies for taking so long,
but we are hanging on the funding right now and I wanted to see if I could
get that information before I sent the minutes out.

Right now we are still standing by on the funds. I will be departing on
leave but DC1 Wissmann will be available for any and all questions.

We appreciate your support and teamwork and look forward to working out with
you starting 01DEC08. Standby on that date for the proposed workout schedule
of "training runs."

i. We are entering in the "mixed" category, and by definition we cannot
have any people that are outside of our geographic area. Each team is
defined in the rule book and states who can be on what team. We understand
the commitment that past team members have made .but we also want to stick
by the rules.
ii. The team will comprise of 13 "legacy" members (anyone on the team
still stationed here) and 11 new runners (7 runners, 4 alternate runners)
iii. New runners will be determined after a series of training runs that
will involve all team members starting 01DEC08 (schedule TBD).

d If you plan on attending either as a volunteer or a runner PLEASE
ensure you have a hotel booked. They are filling up fast (St. Patrick's Day

Good Morning,

The planning and preparation portion of Baker to Vegas is in full swing-we
hope your running is too!

We are currently in the process of finalizing the members who will be
running. At this time there are 38 people requesting to compete and 24
spots. It is important that you attend our first sit down meeting if you
are interested in running, November 7th from 1200-1300 to touch base and
receive all of the pertinent information. If you cannot attend, please let
either DC1 or I know so we can ensure you are still interested. If you are
volunteering to assist with the race logistics we will have another meeting
TBD.

At this point we need full commitment, which I know can be rather difficult
this early out. At this meeting we will discuss:
1-who will be running
2-applicable fees
3-hotels available
4-the (new!) race course
5-tshirt design

We would also like to reiterate, there are numerous roles that you can
participate in the event including: running, alternate runner, van driver,
shuttle driver, logistics, communications, radio, medical, public affairs,
documenting, and countless other support roles. Each one is vital to the
success of the team.

Baker to Vegas 2009 Update

Good Morning,

As many of you have heard, close to 40 active duty, reserve, and Auxiliary
members from Sector LA-LB and outlying units, Sector San Diego, PSU 311, and
D11 including the Sector LA-LB Commander and Deputy Commander participated
in the 24th Annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup on April 19-20 2008. The
Challenge cup is known as "The Law Enforcement Run" and is a relay race,
which begins outside Baker, CA and ends in Las Vegas, NV. It is one of the
largest law enforcement athletic events in the world. In last year's event,
242 teams from as far away as South Wales and Calgary participated totaling
close to 5,000 runners.

The participation in the 24th Challenge Cup was the first time ever that the
Coast Guard, as a team, was represented in the race. In its inaugural year,
Team Coast Guard represented well running in desert terrain, mountain
passes, and temperatures ranging from 90 degrees to 40 degrees. Team Coast
Guard finished the 120 miles in 17 hours and 41 minutes, good for 5th place
in the Federal Station category and 143rd out of 242 teams. Furthermore, the
team was not penalized for any rule violations and completed the race
without any major logistics problems - almost unheard of for a first year
team. Please see the attached photos for a quick glimpse of action from the
race.

Team Coast Guard is ramping up again for participation in the 2009 Baker to
Vegas Challenge Cup, which will be held 14-15 MAR 2009. We currently have
many members that will be re-running the course-but we are now seeking new
team members! Please respond to Stephanie.m.young@uscg.mil or
Nathan.d.wissmann@uscg.mil by Monday of Next week if you are interested.

There are numerous roles that you can participate in the event including:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Baker to Vegas 2009 is 6 months away! The race date is March 14-15, 2009.

I am attending the first of 5 planning meetings tomorrow in Los Angeles and
wanted to get everyone motivated for next years excitement. As we remember
from last year, the 6 months of preparation can go by incredibly fast.

Here is your initial warning email to start running, start planning, and of
course-buy new running shoes.

I am writing to this list first to see if you would like your spot reserved
again. If you know you will be unable to make it, or would not like to
participate, please let me know so I can remove you from the list.

DC1 Nate Wissmann is co-captain with me this year, so if you have any
questions/comments/concerns, e-mail any of us and we will get back to you.
